I spent nearly six hours at a public hearing last night on the proposed deal for a new D.C. United soccer stadium. I listened to dozens of fellow residents, union members, developers, city official and a handful of Council Members (the CMs spoke more than the people they were supposed to be hearing from). I learned bunches and totally support the deal. Here is why. The City Administrator, Allen Lew, has put together an incredible deal that will bring significant economic, cultural and fiscal benefits to the city. Without spending money that will affect the citys capital debt cap, we get a new soccer stadium in a neighborhood desperate for development, we can tear down the eyesore of a Reeves Center at 14th and U and place it with a new mixed-use property that will generate significant tax revenue for the city, we get to build a brand new Reeves Center in Anacostia that will hopefully spur economic development there AND moving the soccer team from RFK allows us to start planning on how to turn that area into a new neighborhood that generates more tax revenue for the city. Overall, this is an amazing deal, far smarter than any other stadium deal that I know of. The amount of thinking that went into this is stunning. Lets just not let DC Council screw it up.
