I started teaching at Syracuse University in 1991, and soon after I arrived I discovered that Syracuse China, the maker of the hefty restaurant china, had a factory and seconds store there. Each fall, I would bring into my first year workshop a clutch of coffee cups and mugs and welcome the new students to Syracuse, giving them a cup made from the local clay and initiating them to the world of writing. Chances were they would need a lot of coffee! So, I was amazed and moved when, all these years latter, two shipments of Syracuse coffee cups arrived from two different sources on the very same day! Lisa Howard sent a single one from California, graced with a California yellow poppy design. In the picture you can see the box is decorated with the route map of the Sante Fe RR from Chicago out to the Pacific! And Steven Featherstone sent FOUR boxes of seconds he culled from the closing of the seconds store! Now I have enough to begin the tradition again with my new writers here in Alabama. Here in Tuscaloosa such gifts do not have the elegant connection to place however. I would have to give the first years a Mercedes G-Class or maybe a tape cassette from the JVC plant! Dear Lisa and Steven (only one fracture in the shipment!), thank you thank you very much.
