I strongly recommend the film Dallas Buyers Club, for which both Jared Leto and Matthew McConaughey deserve Oscars. Why is the film so important? Because -- and importantly, without the treacly sort of sentimentality one comes to expect from such movies -- it gorgeously (and tragically) dramatizes that progressive change is not possible unless certain someones, and certain collectives of someones, are willing to risk everything they have to work both outside of and against the existing systems of power and control. Because we have to be defiant. And persistent. And be willing to break the law, if need be. And because we have to love each other more, and better. And because no one should ever have to be ill and feel abandoned by others -- whether parents, lovers, doctors, or their own country. Because whenever someone is ill, and afraid, we should know that that is our concern.
