I subbed for Heidi Francisco Hanz today and everything went like clockwork. Heidi is sooooo organized. The 6 Masses I played at a small Catholic Church in the N. Georgia mountains the past two weekends came off well and I loved the priest. The relentless chaos behind the scenes very nearly made me rethink this whole substitute organist gig. I kept on my game face and said nothing for five Masses, but before the sixth Mass, when the tenor soloist showed up NOT KNOWING HIS NOTES for his solo and the music director told me the organ was too loud while I was attempting to whip the tenor into shape, I told her to GO AVAY. She did. Diligence worked, as the tenor missed only two entrances (big improvement) when he sang his solo. Pretty sure I wont be invited back bc I told the music director to go away rather than take the time to explain to her with only minutes to spare WHY her comments werent helpful. Really sure I dont care. I show up prepared and I dont do well with chaos. SMH.
