I swear people say this after every decade passes, BUT the 90s were honestly the best. Nikelodeon was in its prime (the cartoons today are nothing compared to when I was a kid), Titanic wowed the world when it was released in 1997, that same year a TV show began to air that would go on to be one of the BEST (if not THE best) shows in television to this day... Buffy The Vampire Slayer. Ryan Gosling was a teen heart-throb with long blonde hair, We swooned over Heath Ledger in 10 Things I Hate About You, Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen were little kids running a muck wearing round, tinted frame sunglasses, The Spice Girls were singing their way to the top promoting girl power, and who could forget those undercut hairstyles a lot of the boys were sporting? (not to mention all the bleached hair...*ahem* suicide blonde *ahem*) The Nintendo and Sega Mega Drive were the coolest consoles, Facebook wasnt even an idea yet, to use the internet we had to wait till no one was using the phone (dial up) and we all used to get on MSN Messenger to chat to our friends after school. The Nokia 3310 wasnt even released yet and we had to actually see someone face to face or pick up the land-line phone if we wanted to talk to them. The war on Terror was just a thing in movies, countless kids used to stay up late to watch the very eerie TV show Are You Afraid of the Dark and The Verve released Bittersweet Symphony which later appeared in the scandalous movie Cruel Intentions. The 1990s were filled with incongruous motifs, without a single theme to tie them together, but looking back it all just seemed to work in a very cool, hip way. (This is open to debate, but I think the 90s were very hip in its own tacky way) Ripped jeans, long hair, combat boots, turtle necks, shoes with lights in the heel, sweaters that tied around the waist, Air Jordans, spiked hair and...double denim. The last great decade? Probably. Oh, and... Jumanji. (There are countless other things that define the 90s, but these were just the first things that came to mind as I wrote this.)
