I teach a course called Language, Culture and Landscape in the International Masters of Landscape Architecture program in Nürtingen-Geislingen University in Germany - our first semester assignment was sort of a warmup that involved having the students work in pairs to write and draw about what their childhood landscapes looked like. Some of them produced really beautiful graphic novels or series of images and text - in some cases they tried to depict how they thought each others home landscape looked like. Since they come from countries all over the world its a fascinating exercise in how common words like landscape, street and nature have entirely different connotations in different places, even if we think we are speaking a common language. This pair of students came from two very different places, a dense urban neighborhood in Amman, Jordan, and a rural part of France.
