I think I have a good clue about why EU Agreement was so important to West. Its because they wanted gay rights for Ukrainians. Just kidding I am willing to bet that somewhere in the 1000+ page agreement is an investor protection clause that lets western companies exploit Ukrainian land without regulation, law sites, or environmental protection. Chevron and Exon have already spent $20B on rights to frack, but I bet EU agreement gave them the legal framework needed to do whatever the **** they want. I am sure pollution or environment is the last thing they care about. Putin does not want competition either. A true revolution and government default would probably nullify any pre-existing agreement. At this point there must be nearly $30B on the table evaporating in front of the people who put theat money up, US/EU Aristocrocy. Its amazing how this coinsides with protests on Maidan and overthrow of an unaccomodating partner by less than 1000 guns. They should have just hired blackwater. If they are willing to invest $30B in to this deal Im betting they want a 2-3 times return. Remember that Alaska was bought for $7.5 million. Even accounting for inflation that would translate to $112 million in todays money. Think about it.
