I think PAP people have somewhat skewed on the debate on foreign students in Singapore universities. First of all, Singapore is a SMALL country and resources are scarce. Unlike US and Britain which have vast resources, huge number of universities and places, Singapore has only a few universities which is barely enough as compared to them. Giving out more than 20% of places in our universities to foreigners is UNACCEPTABLE if the government didnt expand on infrastructures and capacities of our universities. Secondly, most universities in US and Britain give their own scholarships to foreigners, without using taxpayers money. Their strong alumni contributed to the funding, instead of their government. So unless NUS or NTU have built a strong alumni to provide the necessary funding for foreign scholarship, I dont see why Singapore taxpayers, should foot the bill. This is especially so when PAP government is FAR LACKING in taking care of our very own people. These funding for foreigners could have used to reduce fees for Singaporeans or put into other social safety net. Thus, in short, taking a Hokkien term, dont try to be Tua Kang if you arent even making enough infrastructure for your own people and putting enough funds to help your own people.
