I think it is absurd, the notion that all homeschooled kids are sheltered and school is the optimal place for them to learn. My kids are really getting out there in the world, being anything but sheltered and theyre learning so much, its amazing. I am an urban homeschooler (unschooler) and we take full advantage of all of the resources around here in the San Francisco Bay Area. Why? Because I like getting out and I want to explore with my family and give them the appreciation for nature, art, and life that I have. My kids are outside for hours everyday, splashing around in the local lakes and beaches, learning about nature, the solar system, checking out museums, painting and drawing what they want to from their own imaginations, writing their letters because they want to, learning how to write because theyre motivated to write to their friends and family, interacting with people of all ages in all locations and situations, absorbing valuable lessons everyday just by experiencing real life. Theyre mixing it up with other kids nearly everyday, certainly their siblings though, getting vitamin D and building muscles and interpersonal skills. We have friends we see every week and we play for hours. We dont have to keep to a rigid schedule. We can relax and do what we want. Its glorious. I am filled with such pride, seeing everyone work together, learn, love, and laugh together. Of course, homeschooling isnt for everyone but its perfect for us. What do you think when people say homeschooled kids are sheltered or other negative things about home learners? What does homeschooling look like in your family? Or are you not quite there yet but thinking about it? Share your story!
