I think it is funny how the term gringo is defined defiantly to a variety of people. When it was originally documented as an actual word, it was defined as the following: "Gringos is what, in Malaga, they call foreigners who have a certain type of accent that prevents them from speaking Castilian easily and naturally; and in Madrid they give the same name, in particular, to the Irish." However, according to wikipedia, it is basically a slang Spanish and Portuguese word used in Ibero-America (countries in the americas that were colonies of Spain or Portugal), to denote foreigners, often from the United States. The term can be applied to someone who is actually a foreigner, or it can denote a strong association or assimilation into foreign (particularly US) society and culture. However, with my experience, when people use it in New Mexico, it means people not typically Spanish speaking and of light skin tone. Either ways, I thought it was interesting to know the true definition of this derogatory word.
