I think life moves around in cycles of 19 or 20 years. As you near the end of each cycle there is going to be a bit of confusion, identity crisis and soul searching. At the end of first cycle , you are almost at the end of your education and is confused about your choice of career and then most of us settle down on a career, get married, buy stuff and climb the corporate ladder and get financially stable. At the end of the second cycle your youth is almost getting over, you have spent couple of decades in the office, you have kids and mortgages and you start thinking - Is it all there is? Being stuck in the same routine, making money, buying stuff, couple of week a year in the time share resort and back to the same old grind of cubicle, wife and screaming kids? You have before you the last chance to do something different in your life or build a new career. Few of us change to something that gives us real happiness and fulfillment and the rest reconcile themselves the the life that they have and moves on. At the end of the third cycle you are almost 60. You have had a 35 or 40 year long career and you are in a very senior position, well respected by everyone in your organization and you have major clout. You enjoy that and then you get booted out into retirement. Unlike being inside your organization, the world outside dont give a damn about who you were are and your income is reduced. Your clout is gone, your power is gone and you are just another old guy. You thought your kids you lovingly raised will be there to take care of you but they are in different continents busy making their own life. You either accept retirement or try to start another career..maybe as a consultant..that goes on for sometime till your organs start shutting down one by one.. heart fails ,kidney, maybe liver, arthritis? .. you drag along getting spiritual and watering your plants and few reach the end of that cycle.. Now if you are still alive at 80 you look back at life gone by and a future in a geriatric ward or sick bed. Life is gone and the only question that remains is.. Did you live your life according to your ideas or did you live your life based on what someone else told you to? Did you define the word success for yourself or did you borrow that definition from someone else? --- Swami Pankajananda
