I think one of the best qualities about my mom was her surprisingly endless love for animals. Most of you know I have 8 cats and 2 dogs and we used to have more. 2 of our cats were strays, one was going to the pound, one was rescued from my aunts overpopulated house in NY and 4 were kittens that were never adopted. When she was working, mom used to wake up early in the morning to feed the cats and when she fed our cats, she would heat up wet food for the local strays so they had a warm meal in their bellies. Then she would go to work taking care of patients (and her co workers) and when it was time to leave, she would leave out food for the litter of stay kittens outside their office. On one night, she found an abandoned black dog in the middle of the street. Pepper was only 10 months old. Mom corralled her into the car and brought her home. The odd thing was she was allergic to cats and dogs! And she was terrified of most other animals but that didnt stop her from taking in injured birds and rodents or from allowing orphaned squirrels to be releases in our backyard.
