I think the number one reason football is inferior to baseball is that so much of football is “try to do something, but not too much.” Try to block the other guy, but not too much or it’s holding. Try to stop the other guy from catching the ball, but not too much or it’s interference. Try to tackle the quarterback, but not too much or it’s roughing the passer. Except maybe for the balk rule, I can’t think of anything like that in baseball.
