I think the thing that stuck with me was, the whole concept of working on your skills and technique, and most importantly, your sound...If you hear music in your head and you want to really express yourself, then you need the tools to do that. If you don’t have the technique that’s necessary to portray music the way that you want to, then you’re holding yourself back. If you don’t have the sound that you want to hear and that’s going to represent your individuality, then you’re holding yourself back. It really became, “Alright, this makes a lot of sense. I want to play this way. I want to express my self this way and in order to do that I need to have the skills and the tools that will enable me to do that.” So it really started to make sense. All of the things that we work on, you know, scales, etudes, and technique and sound, articulation and all these things. They’re kind of cumbersome but we have to work on them everyday. They’re really not an end in and of themselves. They’re really to help us build the tools so that we can play music, we can play freely, and express our ideas really. ~Steve Cole, interview at teenjazz
