I think this can be overstated. A media owner backed Mr Whitlam in 1972, became disillusioned, and backed Mr Fraser in 1975. Replace the inverted words with Many Australians, including many who didnt take much notice of newspapers, and the same result follows. That apart, if you regard liberalism as the vigorous questioning of privilege, Mr Whitlam remains the great postwar liberal leader. Add the economic liberalism and less profligate spending of Mr Hawke, who knows what a hybrid would have wrought. Or still might.
