I thought I was just being an anxious mom, but Levis doctor agrees with me: the new lump on his chest is scary. After the usual introductions around the office - when his doctor tells the staff, If you want to see what a miracle looks like, this is a miracle dog right here! - we had a good long talk. If Levi was 10 years old, the doctor would have Levi in surgery tomorrow and that lump would come off. But Levi is almost 15. His cancer was expected to kill him more than 4 years ago. Hes lived long enough to become an old coot: deaf, half-incontinent, increasingly mentally confused. Unless hes in obvious distress or that lump grows at a menacing pace, it stays, and Levi continues being my gray-faced baby boy. Someday well run out of bonus time. Every day is time snatched from the grip of heartbreak.
