I thought the circus was an all American creation but it actually was the brainchild of Philip Astley, a horseman who opened a riding school in London, England. By day, Astley taught horsemanship but in the evenings, he would show off the trick riding skills he learned during the Seven Years War in a circular arena that he called a circle or circus, later referred to as a ring. By 1770, Astley had added jugglers, acrobats, ropedancers and clowns to his show. In 1782, he expanded to open the first circus in Paris, France - the Amphitheatre Anglois.
