I thought this was a pretty good article by John Romano, especially as competing in fitness classes and bodybuilding has become more popular in recent years. Some key points I lifted from the article well worth considering if you have competitive ambitions or are merely toying with the notion of getting on stage. Some people just dont belong on the bodybuilding stage. Sometimes its their genetics or theyre just not ready yet. Sometimes theyre delusional. A friend who encourages you to compete when youre not ready is not your friend. Theres no excuse for not being shredded on stage. If youre fat or if the diet didnt go right, dont waste anyones time. Genetics matter. Bone structure cant be changed. If your silhouette doesnt scream bodybuilder pick another division. No calves? Stay at home. Same with bad skin. Competing is serious business. Do it for fun if you must, but realize that youre annoying the audience, the judges, and the truly dedicated competitors. With all that in mind if youre serious about competing then your first point of call should be to seek out other bodybuilders and get their opinions. Bodybuilding is a harsh sport so if you dont like what they have to say then at least respect their opinions. Following this attend a bodybuilding show, check out the standard and see what youll be up against. If you dont think youre quite good enough to compete on a regional or local stage or if youre not confident youll be competitive then youre probably not quite ready compete. Finally try to get someone in your corner whos experienced and can offer you guidance throughout a competitive process. You dont need to hire a coach, most bodybuilders will be willing to give up 5 minutes of their time once per week to assess your progress. Just be sure to do them the courtesy of not wasting their time.
