I took my father to see Fury this weekend and I wanted to pass - TopicsExpress

I took my father to see Fury this weekend and I wanted to pass along a mini-review of the movie. When I first saw the trailer, I was concerned that this would be another Hollywood bash the military, nihilistic portrayal of men in combat that has of late been, in the main, the standard for the studios. Well, that was not the case. Fury is a very good movie. Yes, it deals with men in combat who are at the end of their rope mentally, emotionally and physically and who know the war is coming to an end, but are faced with die-hards who are fighting every step of the way. It is also a tale of the rough and very manly manner of brotherhood of war and how someone who is not of the tribe, or in this sense the crew/family of Fury is inducted into that crew. Lastly, it is a tale of combat, much like Saving Private Ryan, The Pacific and Band of Brothers and it pulls no punches, but is not hyper-violent for the sake of drenching the screen with blood. When an 88mm round from a Tiger hits a Sherman, it is not pretty. Nor are the effects of a .50 caliber machine gun round hitting a soldier at point-blank range. The actors are all outstanding, especially Brad Pitt and Shia LaBeouf. Everyone of them turns in a performance of depth and a certain poignancy, especially the veteran crew members of Fury. There is much that is inferred and obliquely referenced that makes you realize these men have seen and done much and are trying hard each in their own particular waysto keep their humanity about them. This lends a certain poignancy that avoids being maudlin or ham-fisted in its portrayal. Yes, there are standard tropes, it is a WWII movie after all, but these are not overwhelming and do not detract from the movie. And yes, there is the only running Tiger in existence making an appearance. And when it appears the actors all truly make you believe they are in a deep-sh!t situation. If you are a WWII equipment and uniform geek you will especially enjoy the movie. If I were reviewing it for the podcast, which I strongly recommend to my fellow reviewers that we do, I would give it an 8. https://youtube/watch?v=p1xli7OTE_0
