I tore a dress shirt at the elbow today at work, so here is my brief eulogy: dress shirts facilitate the objectification of our formless will to power--we wear them when we wish to "look nice" regardless of how we feel, and in doing so we take what is formless about us (our desire to make a living, to save for a trip, to make a name for ourselves, etc) and make it concrete. The mixed feelings we all feel when we tear a dress shirt at work I think reflect the complex attitude we have towards our own willing objectification. On the one hand, I rarely wear them when I have a choice, but on the other hand I am thankful for the opportunity to have worn this shirt. The fact that it is easily replaced, needed and forgotten, says everything.
