I try not to pop up too much political stuff but as I have been - TopicsExpress

I try not to pop up too much political stuff but as I have been asked whether our guitar playing argentine politician had shown up last Saturday I thought an update may be the way to go. From what I see in the argentine press he says he got as far as Punta Arenas and could go no further due to not pre-booking accommodation here (which is a requirement of our Immigration laws for ALL visitors), so he didn’t arrive here. Today though his stance has changed slightly as he seems to be almost blaming Falkland authorities of keeping him out of what he sees as argentine property. He was basically saying that he was coming to the Falklands for two weeks to preach reconciliation (between England and argetina – no mention of the Falkland Islanders) and to play “anglo rock music” to us. Given that he seems to have a heavy leaning towards the Smiths and Morrissey, this could be quite hideous (apologies to fans of the Smiths). Going by remarks attributed to him he is not coming with a genuine desire to understand our point of view or respect our human right to self-determination. He views the Falklands as being argentine – as some of the following comments highlight – “The deputy from the Metán department, Emanuel Sierra, moved to Buenos Aires and from there to Chile, but the trip I had planned from there to the Falkland Islands for a protest singing for our national sovereignty was frustrated because they would not let him enter”. Also we have “It is regrettable all restrictions have to suffer any Argentine citizen to enter a land that belongs to us and are expensive to feelings of our people, because many of our young people gave their lives for our sovereignty, said Sierra to The Tribune . First, as an example, I mean that any Argentine has to travel to Chile to move to the Falklands, which I think is very unfair. To me they did not ask me a majority requirement of prior accommodation to enter Chile, but if the Falkland Islands, which are ours, he said. Moreover, before traveling Sierra requested an audience with Foreign Minister Hector Timmerman to meet its goal of singing to promote dialogue between the two countries by the Argentina sovereignty over the islands.” He speaks only of trying to promote peaceful dialog between England and argentina so it looks like he is another one that sees us Falkland Islanders as being irrelevant. Will he appear this Saturday as he says he will? We will have to wait and see I guess. I am sure that whilst people here in the Falklands will be polite, as we always are, if we meet him, let us take the opportunity to try and educate the fellow that the Falklands are our country and it will be us, exercising our basic human right to self-determination who will decide the way forward for our country, whether it be to stay as we are, to go for independence one day or to look for some other mechanism that suits us. We had a referendum about our future a very short time ago and he should have the decency to respect that. For my part, I would rather go hungry than give one inch of the Falklands to any aggressive, wannabe colonial power who for many years has waged both a political and economic war against our homeland.
