I try to avoid lengthy statuses however, I feel as though there are a few people that need to hear this: Depression can affect anyone, anywhere. It doesn’t matter how smart a person is. It doesn’t matter if a person has a strong character, if they’re old or young, rich or poor, or if they’re male or female. Depression is not picky. No one is immune. Its not just an illness for people with dark, mysterious pasts or chaotic presents. It is ubiquitous. Empirical and anecdotal evidence suggests this is fast becoming the disease du jour. Antidepressant prescriptions have soared. The World Health Organization warns that mental illness will be second only to HIV/AIDS in the burden it places on the world by the end of this decade. Despite all of this, it is still badly misunderstood. People don’t choose to be depressed. Depression is a very real disease that shouldnt be taken lightly. Depression may be caused by a chemical imbalance in the brain, physical difficulties, emotional problems, stress, unrecognized sources, or a combination of these things. Certain people may have a genetic predisposition for depression, triggered by stressors. If left untreated, depression can affect a person’s social life, grades, work, interests and a whole variety of things. However, with the right treatment and support, a person with depression can have a normal job and get on with life. Unless you have been personally effected by depression you may never fully understand everything that it can/will do to you. If you or someone you know is struggling with depression, GET HELP!!! Depression is NOT a sign of personal weakness and asking for help doesnt make you any less of a person. We all have our own personal battles that we struggle with on a daily basis; some are just worse than others. ❤️ tomclempson/2014/08/robin-williams-did-not-die-from-suicide/
