I unfortunately rarely find myself far enough outside of the city - TopicsExpress

I unfortunately rarely find myself far enough outside of the city to try shots like this. In fact, this was my first time ever attempting to capture our Milky Way galaxy, as well as my first attempt at light painting with a flashlight, my skills at the later of which still need work apparently. I also was hoping to fit more actual landscape in the shot, but the alignment of the galactic ecliptic and the position of the sun below the horizon did not lend itself well to such a shot. This will be my goal for the next attempt, which is coming in September. In addition, while watching the sky and waiting for a good time to start shooting, some very, very faint auroras gave me hope that I would have a spectacular scene to shoot ahead of me. Unfortunately, they did not expand into anything more than a single, anonymous dim streak criss-crossing the Milky Way. Now having said all that negative stuff, dont get me wrong, Im extremely pleased with this as my first attempt! I was also fortunate to see I caught a meteor in the shot; in fact most of my attempts had one! And outside of the photography aspect, I had a fantastic time just sitting in a camp chair watching the stars appear little by little after the sun set, seeing the Milky Way fade into view, watching satellites and the ISS zip by, as well as frequent meteors burning up as they fall into our gravity well. I had a great weekend.
