I used to be one of those people who argued that if you keep your nose clean, walk straight and narrow, stay away from trouble and the wrong crowd, you will be fine. Uh-uh. Sorry, thats totally untrue. For example, in his senior year my son was supposedly suspended for fighting (the suspension was reversed in hours). He had a verbal exchange with a girl. She had her people assault him as school was dismissed. A male friend of hers called my sons name. Thinking it was one of his friends he was exiting the school with, he turned around to a fist to his face. He was immediately wounded, shocked, and confused. He never threw a punch. The school called me and I rushed to the scene. He was still bleeding when I got there to learn that due to the schools no tolerance policy, In the event of a fight, both parties are suspended. This was clearly an assault NOT a fight. My son had never said or heard two words from the young man who sucker punched him. I fought to reverse the schools decision to suspend. Had I been less vigilant, my son would have a public record of fighting and suspension from school. This is not the first time or the last I had to fight to keep his record clean. He is no angel. Hes a regular kid with regular problems. In retrospect, it actually feels like his character is under attack. As a mother, this is DEVISTATING, literally HEARTBREAKING. I will not allow him to be a statistic.
