I usually only post fluff on Facebook, so please disregard or unfriend me or whatever if this is too heavy. But something kinda profound just happened and I feel like sharing. I just encountered an invisible minority and I never realized there could be such a thing. Forgive me if Im over sharing... I just finished my ER night shift, and being my last day in Key West I decided to have breakfast on the beach before my flight home. I sat down at the beach bar and noticed an older grey haired gentleman next to me eating a great dish, so I asked if it was good. A nod with a mouthful of avacaco and bacon was my response. Sold. While waiting for my California tacos to arrive, I overhead the same guy next to me speaking in a distinguished British accent with another man next to him. Regular tourist plans it sounded like. Then they ordered mimosas and announced to their server that this was their 25th anniversary. Being the bafoon I am, I butted in and asked anniversary of what? Idiot I am. My Gaydar has been broken for years. Unabashedly they lifted their glasses and said of us being together, here! We come to this very beach every year on our anniversary. I was surprised, glad and sad at once. Embarassed that I am a homophobic twit. Hats off to any couple of any orientation being together for a quarter century. I was sad that these guys had to fly half way across the world just to feel like themselves in public. I felt glad that they felt welcome, accepted and free in my country. I extracted my foot from my mouth and congratulated them with a toast. Some minorities I encounter are vocal and in your face, but others can be subtle and may not be noticed if you dont pay attention. I need to be better about the latter.
