I wanted to share my letter I wrote to the Missoulian Editor: It seems to me as a society we have become so quick to judge. The recent tragedies in and around Missoula have sparked such unwarranted and angry comments by uninformed people that I felt compelled to share my story with people, in hopes I could help readers understand how it feels to be one of the people who have experienced tragedy. We lost our 22 year old son two years ago July, he was a passenger of a drinking and driving crash. It makes me cringe to think what negativity and cruel comments people said about my son and our family when he was killed. Until you have a tragedy hit home you cannot possibly understand how it feels to lose a loved one unexpectedly. There is no greater loss then losing a child. Please make sure before you submit thoughtless comments and make uninformed judgments that you take a long hard look in the mirror and ask yourself: Have I driven without my kids or myself buckled up? Have I left an unattended bucket of water out? Have I ever had one too many drinks and driven home? Have I not worn life jacket around water? Have I judged someone harshly who actually has a mental illness? Have I assumed families who are seeking justice through the legal system are doing it only for money? What ever happened to empathy and compassion and understanding? It feels like our country and our small little community in Western Montana have lost their souls along with some morals. Maybe its social media and the fact that we have enabled people to hide behind computer screens with fictitious user names, who throw stones and make assumptions about peoples for which they really know nothing about. The thoughts I ask you to consider are simple; before you feel compelled to write that nasty hurtful comment put yourself in their shoes before you hit the send button. Think about how this tragedy could be your son or daughter and avoid adding more pain to an already grieving family. Dont let a tragedy happen to you before you realize this. Paige Smith
