I was asked by one of my favorite fisherman/writer/communist friends to answer a few questions for an author blog hop deal that is going on and around. Ill be posting some links as I learn them to the other people on the list so you can see that Im not just dropping names, Im dropping F bombs as well which can only mean one person. And a dozen others. Here are my answers to the musical questions about process. What am I working on? Im working on several projects at the moment. There seems to be some competition between them as to which will get finished first. My money is on my short story anthology, which is a collection of stories inspired by flash fiction contests and short writing exercises. Im only saying that because Im much closer to finishing that project than either of my two novels. One novel is a period piece set in the late sixties in a mental institution. The other is a crime/cold war thriller about a strange pseudo serial killer named Stan. How does my work differ from other of its genre? Im not sure that does, if Im honest. I hope that it brings a different perspective and a uniquely dry sense of irony/humor which befits my two favorite American authors : Mark Twain and Kurt Vonnegut. I keep running into people who hate those two and to them all I can say is dont worry, Im not even close to being that good. But I try... Why do I write what I do? Most of what I write addresses what I feel is lacking in the world Ive grown up and old in. Compassion, empathy. Things which used to be considered virtues are now vilified by the modern culture. In my lifetime Ive seen my country go from, “Ask not what your country can do...” to “Greed is Good.” From E pluribus unum; to In God We Trust. I want to raise a hand and speak quietly to the values of my parents generation. At least the ones they preached to me if not always practiced. How does your writing process work? I like to think I work from both extremes toward the middle. Sometimes I am a complete “pantser” as was the case with most of the Whale Whisperers Saga. But even that is a bit misleading. I always have at least an idea. Whale Whisperer is from a dream I had decades ago about a young Indian Vedic and a visiting European Princess. In that stage it was a romantic folk story and at most maybe a novella in length. But when I actually created the characters and put them into action it became an alternate universe based on the British Empire never having been turned back and eventually becoming the only government on the planet in what would be a parallel present day Earth. But thats never said in any of the three books so , “Sssssh.” Please dont tell anyone. :D ------- For more about process, brownies, and trout, dont ask JD Mader. avoidingthestairs.blogspot/2014/03/my-writing-process-blog-tour-2014.html
