I was asked recently if jumping rope was a good work out for basketball...It surprised me because just recently I was talking with Coach Heiter and he was talking about how jumping rope is one thing that he really would like to see people do a lot of. I have been a fan of jumping rope since I was a little kid seeing Muhammad Ali jumping rope training and talking about tiring out the opponent by dancing around. And then again in the Rocky movies...aside from chasing a live chicken jumping rope is probably the best thing for quick feet. So, yes...jumping rope is great for basketball. You need quick feet in basketball and jumping rope will improve that. Another thing I like about jumping rope is that it gets you used to being on your toes (front half of the foot). It pains me seeing people playing sports flat footed. Jumping rope also takes coordination which improves with practice. I thought jumping rope would be like riding a bike but like a lot of things if you dont stick with it the skill diminishes. I recently bought some jump ropes to start working out again and I AM HORRIBLE. LOL...But I am going to start jumping rope again and hopefully get half way decent with it. So, if you want to start jumping rope to get into shape for basketball I say do it! Start with your standard two feet on the ground speed jumping. Then as you get that work on doing side to side jumping rope and then move up to the Ali Shuffle. It will do wonders! Here is a quick video on four quick tips to get you jumping rope.
