I was at an event recently and was chatting with a candidate for city council. The conversation led to the MUSD override. This post is not about the override. But more about what the candidates spouse said. By no means am I attacking the candidate or the spouse. I am honestly curious as to an answer. They had a flier/newspaper - I cannot really remember - that had the photo of the two young individuals sitting facing each other on a pool chase under a towel at Copper Sky. They pointed out that this was not appropriate and that I knew what they were doing under there. I didnt say it that night but I have been thinking about it for a few days now. I have absolutely NO IDEA what the two kids were up to. They could have been doing what we all thought they were doing. They could have been protecting themselves from the sun while playing a game of cards. Now, I know the latter is more unlikely, but it is possible. The reason this was brought up was because of the funding to our schools. Again, this is not about that. But it made me think; for those Redditors out there, think Showerthoughts. Anyway, what is there to do in Maricopa for these kids that would stop them from doing this? If we fund more school programs, that could help. But there will always be those kids who buck the system and do not join a program. We created a skate park and it is almost always packed when I go by it. We have help from the Ak-Chin community with the Multi-tainment Center. But what has Maricopa done for these kids? They cannot go burn off energy exercising in the gym because of age restrictions. They are limited to and from places because of transportation. Maricopa IS and for the foreseeable future, will be a bedroom community. This means that parents will work monstrous hours and be gone for the entire day, for the most part, unless they are lucky enough to have a job IN Maricopa. So, what do we do? Rather, what do our candidates do or propose to assist the kids of our community. I have not done enough research on this topic but do we have indoor basketball or racquetball courts for the summers? Do we have flag football programs? Do we have an art program geared towards graffiti - yes graffiti is art? Are we looking into an actual youth center - only if we do not have one - so kids can go and have fun? What are we doing as a community with city funded programs or with privately funded programs for the younger members of our community? Or even is there anything else in the pipeline to entice other business/organizations here that could help with this? All comments welcome, as this is my Showerthought for the day.
