I was fortunate enough to see Robin Williams improvise live twice - TopicsExpress

I was fortunate enough to see Robin Williams improvise live twice and I learned a lot both times. The first time was at The Comedy Store and he mainly played with Richard Belzer. He blew all the other players away and Belzer was the only one who could even stay on the stage with him. It was like watching Alan Iverson score and score and score. The second time I saw him was when he played with Paul Sills ensemble Sills & Co in LA. With that company of actors Robin played much differently. I remember in particular that he did a great scene with Severn Darden. In that scene he was patient and grounded and there was true give and take between Severn and Robin. It was like watching Robin play more like Magic Johnson instead of Iverson. He passed and rebounded as much as he scored. He also looked more happy playing this way. Its a damn shame about his suicide and a true loss especially for his family, his friends, his community and his fans. But his talent, his genius, his sensitivity, his soul, his sweetness, his comedy didnt kill him, his depression and his addiction did. Given all of what he struggled with his disease (like millions of people do), I can only be grateful for all that he gave to so many people during his life on-stage and on-camera. RIP Robin Williams and thank-you for everything you shared.
