I was fortunate in that my Uncle Bud loaned me his car for my Senior Prom. The car was a testimony to the pinnacle of the American Automotive Industry. It was a 1958 Ford Thunderbird. The year it came out it was named Motor Trend magazines Car of the Year. It was considered the American Automobile Industrys first Personal Luxury Car It was a majestic exercise in styling. The exterior lines carried through the interior and were reflected on both the front dash and the rear shelf. It was powered by a thundering thirsty 300 horsepower 352 cubic inch V8. Though not blessed with sports car handling, it could run with most anything on the highway. The year it came out only 8% of all the cars sold in America were imports and over 50% of those were Volkswagen Beetles. The car my uncle loaned me was a bit different than the car pictured - the lower body was lime green while the roof was white. My uncles car was not clad with Kelsey Hayes wire wheels either. Driving that fantastic machine on Prom night placed the Squarebird, as the 4 seater was known, forever in my pantheon of unforgettable automobiles.
