I was gonna let this blow over, considering Ive shared much of this work before, and Im already flooding everyones feed with tessellations like a virus. But the super-talented, Marc Evan, requested that I share 15 pieces of art (3 pieces a day for 5 days), and since he and a handful of my other favorite artists have been participating in this chain, Id be remiss to not share some of my past artwork, and nominate a few artists as well. Ill begin with a few pieces from Manufacturing Seasons. This series of photo-collages is a documentation of the last days of Greenpoint Terminal Market, an industrial complex in Brooklyn, NY. It closed down decades ago and just stood there for years, subjected to weather, adorned with graffiti, and used as a squat. In May 2006, most of the complex burned down in a ten-alarm fire, the largest fire in New York since 9/11. Prior to its demise, I took thousands of photographs throughout the complex over the span of several years, documenting the labyrinthine and precarious industrial wasteland. By reconstructing locations and revealing the succession of nature over time, the documented environments transform with the changing seasons and weather. Space and time are reconfigured simultaneously within a lattice of weather, elements, shifting lighting, and stages of the dwelling’s post-functional life. I shot this series in 35 mm film with a Canon FTb manual camera. The originals of these collages are relatively large, and having mostly shown prints from this body of work, I have yet to show this series in its entirety. So with that said, my first nomination is someone whose art I have loved and been inspired by for over 15 years, Thomas Gogola. Every painting from this underground Detroit artist blows my mind, and I would love for more people to check out his artwork!
