I was honored to share a platform with Dr. Akram Nadwi. He is a gem for the Muslims in the UK and I pray that Allah blesses him in ilm and amal. One of his amazing projects is the compilation of female scholars of hadith throughout the centuries. This work spans over 50 volumes and should be printed soon. The project demonstrates that female scholarship has always been an integral part of our Islamic tradition. An interesting point that the Shaykh informed us of is that in his research, he has found thousands and thousands of female scholars of the Islamic science, yet not a single female Islamic philosopher of note. In other words, the tradition that most connected with Hellenistic thought and would be assumed to be the most progressive (i.e., Western thought) never really produced female scholars, whereas our own tradition of the Quran and Sunnah has always had women who excelled in its sciences. Amazing, isnt it?!
