I was in Mrs. Padgetts 8th grade English class. We had gone to the library that day which was particularly awesome for me because I knew it meant we would be doing next to nothing.. Plus its far easier to hide from the teacher when surrounded by rows of books. As Mrs. Padgett sat and told the kids (the ones who were paying attention) what the lesson plan for that day was, me and my friends (who would later graduate amongst the lower tier of our class) sat in the big chairs reading Sports Illustrated magazines and probably talking about the girls who had just started filling out their sweaters. Coach Eason, the librarian, scurried past us to the old school big screen TV that sat in the front of the room. Something has happened he said as Mrs Padgett sat down her agenda to pay attention. He flipped on the news and we were immediately told that one of the Twin Towers had been hit by a plane. Seeing as we were mostly white kids from the suburbs, nothing really terrible had ever happened to us.. Not on this large of a scale anyways, so our immediate speculation was, Wow, what kind of moron pilot flies into a building?. We literally thought it was an accident. I mean, it had to be, didnt it? Thats when the second plane hit. I feel very fortunate that this happened when I was in 8th grade as opposed to earlier, because it was about time to grow up anyways..now we didnt have a choice. I used to live in a world where you got up at 7am, watched cartoons and then you and your buddies took your bikes and rode wherever you wanted, as long as you were home by supper time. No phones, no iPods, but most importantly.. No worries. Children now live in a time where we must constantly be looking over our shoulders, wondering if, or more likely when it will happen again. On September 11, 2001, my innocence and the innocence of every child in this country was cast to the side, never to be seen again, simply because we live in a world that is all too ugly at times. To us that remain, it was the beginning of a new age.. But for thousands of others, it was the end. Those are the ones we should never forget. Lets us strive everyday, even when its not convenient, to make this world a better place so that our kids do not grow up afraid like we did. Lets not let the victims of that horrible day die in vain.
