I was irritated by the fact that local Value Village employees proudly sport badges that state A portion of every purchase goes to supporting the Canadian Diabetic Association, and yet when questioned had no idea what the parameters of their support meant. I was further astonished when NOT ONE PERSON in management at the local Nanaimo VV could explain what sort of relationship VV had with its nonprofit partners. I decided to do some research. Although technically true, the slogan is deceiving. The CDA and other non-profit partners collect clothing and household item donations at their own expense and SELL them to Value Village by the pound at a pre-set rate — a rate that although is below retail, is confidential. *The charity groups that partner with Value Village get NO portion of the sales generated from those donations, only the bulk rate.* -- The owners have figured out the perfect scam. Imagine running a business where all of your stock is technically donated. Where you can solicit as someone collecting donations for the CDA. You buy these donated items from the charity for, lets say, 10% of their value. You, as a business owner, get to keep the other 90% less the cost of running the business & by donating the 10% (but its not actually donating in the traditional sense, because its a pre-sale loss) you get the right to say you are soliciting donations on behalf of a registered charity! -- Im not sure what to do with this information, to be honest.
