I was just told by a friend that she personally knows women who relinquished a child to adoption and that they are fearful of being found. She says because I am an activist for restoring equal access that those people would, of course, not be willing to talk to me. I explained that I had spoken with women who didnt want contact and that after contact from me, the message was passed along to the adoptee to have no contact. She also says that even if there were no papers given which guaranteed privacy, that the women were promised privacy. That it was an agreement that they were given, even if it wasnt a legally binding contract and that they cant speak up for themselves. If they speak up they will out themselves. She also said that DNA tests could reveal the medical information that adoptees need to know. That even if someone grows up in their biological family and does know medical illnesses that run in families and there are no tests for, it doesnt mean they will pay attention to them. I explained that giving equal access to original birth certificates is far more private than facebook postings or DNA tests thru various companies. That wasnt seen as something that should be done either. When I discussed that the data proves that about 98% of birth mothers want contact, she replied that there were still 2% of women who didnt. She was firm that she knows several women who feel this way and that my activism kept me from seeing that side. So, tell me... do you know women who absolutely do not want contact? that would feel that their promise of privacy would be violated? I am not asking you to out people, I am honestly wanting to know how many women you personally know who are afraid of being found?
