I was notified today that my grade school teacher had fallen ill. She is currently in hospice care and they have stopped her treatments for cancer. I am supposed to call her in a bit. I’ve scheduled a time with one of her sons who is with her. What do you say to someone who has been so instrumental in your life? Someone who was there for me long after grade school, far beyond lessons in a classroom. I’m wracking my brain trying to figure what approach to take. Do I pretend she’s not ill ? Do I tell her how much she shaped not just my life, but, the lives of so many ? How can I possibly thank her for all the years of encouragement and support? Is that even possible ? For someone who writes songs, blogs, poems, etc, I sure am at a loss for words.
