I was one of the Colored Kids spoken about in this essay. My little sister Anita and I would walk to our church each Sunday morning. When we approached the block the where the 1st Baptist Church (white) was, we crossed to the other side. When we got to the block where the Ensley Methodist Church (white) was, we again crossed the street to the opposite side. We did this because we were afraid of the white church members that stood on the side walks in front of those churches. They seem so unfriendly and seemed to look at us with hateful eyes. I never knew about the Color Guard. I only knew that we felt safe when we arrived at our church...Metropolitan C.M.E. Church.
