I was over the moon yesterday having found information on the exact area where I had been left as a three year old by my opera singing mom - in the care of a nursery owned by a lover of the arts and classical music who owned a castle (which held the nursery) in Spotorno Liguria called the Villa Ada. My mother told me she was the countess Signorina Ada Morpurgo from Spotorno. That was all the information I had to go on when I searched for her online and found that she was a member of the well known Ligurian family Morpurgo. I looked her up on the internet and there she was mentioned, with photos of the castle and the grotto which I remember vividly being taken to along with the rest of the other children . I can still remember the sweet scent of candles burning and lighting up the cave of the grotto and the sound of a particular hymn which went Ave, ave, ave Maria . . . as we stood huddled together singing and praying to the Virgin Mary. Although I no longer consider myself religious, those memories remain dear and sweet to me. They bring back the innocence of childhood; its fresh, unsullied moments of happiness. This experience has been like going full circle and finding myself again at the beginning.
