... I was raised Catholic and Lutheran, and once, a spider was crawling on the wall of our Sunday-school class, which my mother was teaching, and the pastor killed it. My mother was horrified and never stopped telling that story. The Baptist minister of my ex-husbands church used to go out every Sunday after church for an early dinner that always included meat. I used to watch him and his family join hands and thank God for that poor, slaughtered animal -- we did it ourselves in my family as I grew up -- all religion, I quickly concluded, is mind control, a fallible human being creating self-aggrandizing sermons to tell you what God thinks, wants, expects. I believe there is only one way to know God: to intuit God through our deepest thoughts and feelings. We KNOW what is right and wrong without anyone with an agenda telling us. The problem with religion is that it is as fallacious as the people who create and perpetuate it. It fails completely to address the importance of animal suffering, human culpability in that suffering, the devastating effects of that suffering to the entire planet. Religion is human-centered. It ignores all non-human life and treats it as though it is here for our sustenance and pleasure. It creates an incredibly selfish, vain God whose primary concern is that he be worshiped and glorified at any cost. If thats who God really is, Ill take my chances in hell... Linda Wessinger Clay
