I was saddened to see today, that Mr. Cub Ernie Banks passed away at the age of 83. Without a doubt the greatest Chicago Cub of all time. Back to back NL MVPs, first time ever, 512 Hrs most of which were hit as a SS, in a time when the only thing players had as a pick me up or performance enhancing was a cup of coffee with extra sugar. Despite his greatness as a MLB player like Ron Santo and countless other Cubs players and Millions of die hard Cub fans such as my father, Mr.Cub has seen his maker, before, something EVERY Cubs fan hopes and prays they see before we meet our maker, a World Series and World Championship. I actually had the opportunity to meet Mr. Cub when I was 14 years old and its probably a very typical story of benevolence of anyone who had the good fortunes to have met Ernie Banks. Til this day I dont know how my father and Ernie Banks met nor how my father convinced Ernie Banks to be a sales man and promote North America Van lines out of Irvine Ca. but he did. Granted, Ernie came and went when he wanted, but the company was glad to have such a legend hitched to their company. Anyway, one day my Father my sister Michelle Zipser and I went to my dads office and there he was, Mr. Cub himself, Ernie Banks. I dont remember too much of the encounter other then he was very nice and he knew that my father took me golfing every weekend and as my Father and I started walking to the parking lot to go home, Ernie said hey I got something for you guys. He motioned us over to his car, popped open his trunk and took out a golf bag with his name Ernie Banks embroidered on it, equipped with a full set of golf clubs and he said Break them in for me. Say hi to your biggest fan, my dad and try to convince him the curse of the billy goat, is pure fiction for me.If theres anyone who can, its you. RIP.
