I was sitting on my front porch watching the world go by when a young man walked by with his sons hand in his hand. That brought back some really fond memories; for I was never so secure as when my hand was in my Dads hand. Now that the ol man is gone I get a knot in my throat every time I think about him. My best memory is his walking to work through the school playground to catch the Shoppers Special bus some 10 blocks away. See, the Special cost only a nickel. The regular bus charged a quarter and it passed by right behind our house. Now Dad walked 10 blocks twice a day to save a total of .40 cents. He was a very organized and methodic guy and he budgeted .50 cents a day for the bus; and he did stick to his budget. The money he saved we found every morning on top of the dresser; ten cents a piece for me and my three sisters. It was our school spending money. Back then a Coke cost a nickel. We had coins, we were rich! But more so we knew he loved us because the money came from his sacrifice for us. And that, still plays and will play until we follow him into the beyond.
