I was thinking . . . Nothing seems to change. After all these years we are having the same debate. After all these years we are still arguing. You would think we would learn, we would grow, we would move beyond that same discussion. But you would be wrong. Nothing seems to change. Who has the most money, the biggest house, the most friends on Facebook? Who has the newest car, the latest phone, the fastest computer? Who lives in the best neighborhood and goes on the best vacations and went to the best school? It’s what we want to know. It‘s what matters to us. It’s how we value others as well as ourselves. We even do it in the religious world. Who has the most members, the biggest facilities, the largest budget? And then we assign greatness. This, of course, is nothing new. It’s the same discussion. Year after year. Decade after decade. Century after century. Working, trying, fretting, jockeying for position and power and prestige. They did it too. Had a big debate. On and on they went, arguing about which one of them was the greatest. Seems rather foolish since they were hanging out with Him. According to some guy named Mark, they had just seen Him feed thousands of people, give sight to a blind man, and drive a demon from a boy. They were eye witnesses to His amazing miracles. And their response? A debate about which one of them was the greatest. So He told them. He gave them the criteria for greatness. Of course, it seems He was confused. After all, He said nothing about houses or cars or bank accounts. He forgot to mention style or status or education. Instead, He said, “If anyone wants to be first, he must be the very last, and the servant of all.” And that was it. In one simple statement, He set forth the pathway to greatness. And all these years later, nothing has changed. Neither the debate nor His definition. Nothing has changed.
