I was thinking about this while reading about the celebration of the life of Miss Edna MacNeail, which Susan Elia MacNeal posted: Phyllis Brooks Schafer posts words from a requiem - in traditional style. As a person who was raised Catholic, one thing I always did like about Church was the ritual - and the language used - which is similar to Anglican/Episcopal rites, especially for funerals. One of the loveliest passages in the Bible is the 23rd Psalm, and I love the poetic solemnity of the traditional King James version (almost identical to Catholic liturgy) The LORD is my shepherd; I shall not want. . He maketh me to lie down in green pastures: he leadeth me beside the still waters... and Eternal rest, grant unto him/her O Lord and let perpetual light shine upon him/her. .. I noticed that - at least during Catholic services, theyve changed the language to be more vernacular and it is not nearly as moving or uplifting. I understand the effort of the Church to be more appealing to more people, but why give up the beautiful language and rituals that have united generations because younger people MIGHT be more attracted to the Church if it was dumbed down? And alienating the faithful who are the ones who show up for Mass every week? These cosmetic changes are a poor substitute to the actual policies which turn people away from organized religion.
