I was told that, at a time like this, it is good to be around family. I am flying to LA right now to see Sara for the first time since my father passed, and together, we will then fly to New York to see the rest of my family – biological and extended. But I will also see the people who have volunteered to be my family – which is particularly nutty considering you weren’t born stuck with me. The last 36 hours have been a whirlwind of tears and hugs, and strangers at airports looking at me funny. And family. My SigEp family has been texting and calling and emailing and trying to make me laugh and asking if I need anything. A few hundred people I know personally and several thousand I’ve never met, and I call them all brother and I mean it. My comedy family has been my rock, knowing that we all have our serious side and that pain is part of what we do. Last night, there two dozen comedians at my show, and some of them didn’t say much more than “hello” because they knew that simply being there is what I needed. And my internet family. I don’t want to use the word “fans” because I’m a bigger fan of you guys than you are of me. Some of you have been with me long enough that I recognize your names, and some of you are new to me. But every one of you has been important. The wonderfully sweet comments I’ve gotten, the overwhelming amount of sheer reaction to my post about my father – it’s something I don’t even know if I could begin to explain to him. But its amazing. I promise, I will be funny again soon. I’m sure there’ll be some new inane law, or a politician will say something ripe for mocking, or there will be a dumb product I can review on Amazon. For now, I just want to be thankful. Thank you.
