I wasnt going to post this story, it may be a bit long winded, for which I apologize but it may give some hope and belief that miracles can happen. Some of you are aware that I have two finches, Peanut & Fluff and last year, their hatchling Fluffernutter was doing great, learning to fly, then I unexpectedly found him dead in their cage. As I recently posted, they are now the proud parents of 3 more hatchlings, which are growing so fast, its amazing to watch their progress. When Fluffernutter was first hatched and had no skills of his own, he fell out of their nest a few times, which I never thought hed recover from, but he did. To avoid the same situation from happening, especially now since the nest is so crowded, we decided to place a low box filled with hay and nesting materials so that if one of the babies fell from the nest theyd have a safe place to land. That was a good idea, or so we thought. We had to open the cage to place the box and usually when they see your hand in the cage, they stay towards the back and away from the intruder. Not the case last night - Fluff escaped and flew around the house. I cant convey the stress and turmoil that ensued...fyi, I have 3 cats also... Fluff was flying around the living room, landed on the drapes, Garfield saw her, flew through the air and lunged towards the drapes, ripping them down. Next thing we saw was Garfield under the dining room table with Fluff in his mouth!! We gathered up the other cats so if we were able to get Fluff from Garfield, the others wouldnt get her. I chased Garfield from one room to the next and eventually found him under my daughters bed, but no Fluff. Retracing his steps, we found Fluff, heart pounding out of her chest, in the kitchen. I scooped her up and returned her to their cage, sure she would die and so their babies too, as Peanut would not be able to take care of all three of them alone. She remained on the bottom of the cage all the rest of the night with her little chest pounding. Its taking time, but shes now flying, eating, drinking, and taking care of her babies. I did a lot of praying, I must say, still not believing shed survive the stress and not sure of the extent of her injuries. My husband commented that if Garfield didnt catch her we probably would have never been able to, which in hindsight is probably true, who knows what may have happened. Im just so grateful that as bad as the situation seemed, Fluff survived, they are reunited as a family, and I am so grateful and do believe in miracles. I know this is just a little story about my birds but I was sure when I saw Fluff in Garfields mouth, her life had ended, and I cant convey my guilt in words. But sometimes when it seems its as bad as it can get, there is always hope, so never give up.
