I watched Richard Linklaters Before Midnight a few nights ago, the third in his series of films starring French actress/songstress/screenwriter/director/(producer?), Julie Delpy, and American actor/screenwriter, Ethan Hawke. (The preceding films were Before Sunrise and After Sunset, I believe). Like all of Linklaters films, this one centered entirely on dialogue and conversations about gender roles, relationships, society, politics and life in general. I love his films. Anyway, it struck me that in this film, Julies character is like this perfect, feminist, intelligent, traveled, beautiful mother goddess, and Ethans character is this creepy, old, ugly, egotistical, insulting Tom Waits type of asshole who, typically male, accuses his female partner of being crazy and then expects to sleep with her. The film ends with her standing up for herself, speaking her mind, and dumping him. I couldnt help but think that this sad, end scenario and display of male chauvinism is typical in many relationships.
