I watched that old Ron Howard movie tonight called Backdraft about the firemen. Firefighting is one of those professions where no one can be in it just for the money, though firemen ought to be paid and paid well. But a sense of entitlement or self-preservation is dangerous, sometimes deadly. Imagine a fireman standing outside a burning building telling his captain, Naw, dude, I need another 100,000 a year before I walk in there! Doesnt happen. The fire department doesnt need that. They need people who, at their core, are so in love with their fellow man they will go ape shit crazy and charge into a burning, collapsing building, in hopes that somehow theyll carry YOU out alive. Maybe thats the problem with the church. Entitlement. Self-preservation. Maybe we just dont get the mission yet. Remember? Acts 1 [8] But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judaea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth. I dont see anything in that line about push your favorite doctrine all over the planet and become 501c3 approved so the government likes you. However, I can picture more than one teacher informing God, Iraq? Are you crazy? Look, a lot of people are saying this is the end times and that the world is ending. Well, if thats true, why spend your time trying to be comfortable? This is a rescue mission, man. If youre a Christian, why are you in church on Sunday? Training your kids in the Bible? Okay, but youre the parent, how do you know if theyre getting what they need? Youre not the Bible expert? Maybe you could ask God what to do about that. Cuz if the world is on fire, do you really want to be someone who burns along with it, or do you want to kick down a few doors and carry someone to safety?
