I watched the end of the debate with my 12-yo daughter. She wouldnt vote for either. She felt Mike Honda for Congress came across as arrogant and insecure, if he had actually accomplished much he wouldnt be tooting his own horn. She found the gas remark funny and crass, as it implied to her middle-school ears that he would soon be passing some. As for Ro Khanna, Mika took issue with his rhetoric on restoring the American dream. She doesnt believe it ever existed, she sees it as a propaganda-like illusion. Ill have to inquire further whether she thought that Ro Khanna was being purposely manipulative or whether she felt he was just ignorant/naive, but I daresay either possibility would doom him in her eyes. After the debate, there was an ad in favor of a proposition. Mika expressed dismay about how manipulative (her word) these ads were. They want you to vote one way, so of course they are going to tell you whatever they think will make you agree. She just assumes that everything in political ads is a lie and dismisses them altogether. -- Now, I do think I have a particularly bright 12-year old with a lot more political experience that many grown ups. But I think candidates often underestimate the intelligence of the electorate, which in a district like CD 13 is likely to be above average anyway.
