I watched this one yesterday. A 1999 film, it has a good cast and involves multiple storylines taking place in New York City on New Years Eve 1981. I wont give a lengthy review, but this movie is a bit of a miss. It kind of wants to be the excellent film After Hours (with Griffin Dunne), but it just doesnt make it. There are some excellent moments, but I was most struck by how miscast Paul Rudd was, as a bitter, adolescently depressed, hip New York angry young man. He did his best, but I could really see him struggling; and its hard for me to see his baby-faced cuteness and sunny face in that context. It would be like me trying to play Jim Morrison - you know, not my thing. The funniest line belonged to Jeanine Garofalo, who was having a bad night and - in a fit of frustration - kept trying to strike a match and suddenly burst out, THESE MATCHES ARE DISAPPOINTING ME!!! Jay Mohr did a good job and brought some heart, but it seemed a strangely one-dimensional movie with one-dimensional performances, though as I said, some good moments. You could give it, say, 2.5 stars out of 5.
